THE STUDIO
2024 - 2025
THE STUDIO Series developed from it's original job of taking pictures of paintings on canvas and paper, and on glass, in order to have a record of work done in late 2024 to early 2025, into something else. The "something else" is photographs over that same time period, which are of the studio space itself, mostly in black and white, but some in color: the light filtering through shades and curtains, the shadows everywhere, the movement of the several ceiling fans, the angles of the columns looking upward, and how those angles shift. How large the space is.

There are still pictures, and as well there are some videos which make clear that the apparent quiet and stillness has other dimensions. So then, this series looks at dimensions, angles, ductwork, waterlines, as they intersect and overlap on the ceiling, as well as angles created by household furnishings and walls and doors.
The environment where one is alone with all of this, and the history of what the space has been before: early 20th century children, whose small fingers untangled knots on the weaving looms that were once here, and that labor and those ghosts can still be felt. Can they be felt, though, in the photographs taken in this place, now a 21st century artist's studio? Maybe in the shadows. Maybe along the wall under the windows. Maybe in the machine oil spilled and still there, between planks of wood flooring. Maybe in the sounds from above and below the studio, in other spaces.
