SHADOWS

NEW SHADOWS

2025

Schiffer Noland Studio, that is both Peggy Schiffer and Sam Noland, have been looking at and taking pictures of shadows for years.

There is something different, and more defined involved in THE NEW SHADOWS Series. The new pictures are focused in more confined space, space we look at daily, at different times of day and in different weather.  The shadows are sometimes elongated and distorted, sometimes they are saved not in still pictures but by way of video. Often, the pictures are black and white. The same limited subjects are photographed at different times of the year, and may cause confusion as  corners are turned and angles are foreshortened or bent by the light

The very familiar, very ordinary shadows in these new images are disorienting sometimes while also being so familiar, equally to us as the photographers as is also the case for the viewer.

MOVING SHADOWS

2023 - ONGOING

The Moving Shadows are observations using video which lasts for seconds: nothing is interjected. The motion is not edited. There are choices made about what and when to record, and whether to use the sound which was recorded with the video, or to have no sound, or to record another sound to accompany the video.

The Moving Shadows Series is the ground on which the various other shadows stand.

SHADOWS

2020 - ONGOING

The Shadows Series, are digital photographs of places in or near home, which transform daily through strong light, the time of day and other surprises. That which seems to be “known”, is not at all “known”, it is always in the process of transforming, and the photographer has to keep up and record that which the day presents.
