Although we have taken pictures at a number of protests, this series is different in that we are able to return to the same location and take pictures there, sometimes of the same protestors. Yes, this can be done at a strike day after day, and we have photographed that too, but this is not the same.
The purpose for each of these protests, center on the constitution, democracy as opposed to autocracy, the rights of citizens, the responsibilities of elected politicians, the separation of church and state, health care, social security, and all else that is currently in a state of crisis in the United States.

Those present at the protests feel compelled to be there, that it is the least they can do: to stand up and stand for what they believe in. Nothing could be more urgent. These are respectful occasions. The photograph show the words on placards, and by way of costumes sometimes too; but it is the faces, mostly as individual portraits, that are at the heart of this project for us: the sorrow, the urgency, the bewilderment; the being with others of all ages and with all different backgrounds, out there no matter the weather just to say that they are there and they are not going away. Those are faces we want to look at again and again.
