The photographs  in the DOWNSTAIRS/UPSTAIRS Series are all taken in a mill building in western Massachusetts,  over a six year period.  

Six years seems like enough time to get to know a place, no matter how large it is, and no matter how much history is locked in it's mortared, layered, glazed, and painted boundaries.

It sounds like enough time and it was enough: time to learn about the shadows, the angles and the intervals between one angle and another, one set of stairs and another, one door and another. Enough time too, to find the images that needed to be made, in that fractured slanting light, pointing somewhere else.
